On 26 April 2016, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) held the fourth workshop under a MacArthur Foundation-funded project on strengthening cooperation between Chinese and Western policymaking communities on nuclear issues. Held in Beijing and jointly organised with the China Institute for International Studies (CIIS), the meeting attracted experts from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), the United Kingdom and the United States. Expanding on previous IISS-CIIS discussions on nuclear security cooperation in the narrow sense of physical security of nuclear facilities, this meeting expanded that definition to incorporate nuclear energy and fuel cycle choices, non-proliferation and nuclear security, cybersecurity, deterrence, and broader regional relationships.
