James Hackett

Editor of The Military Balance; Senior Fellow for Defence and Military Analysis

Main responsibilities: James Hackett is Senior Fellow for Defence and Military Analysis and Editor of The Military Balance at the IISS. His duties include analysing worldwide developments in conflict, military and security affairs, and defence technology. He is engaged in writing, presenting and publishing, as well as working on research and consulting projects for the Defence and Military Analysis Programme, and more broadly in coordination and cooperation with other IISS staff and research programmes. He determines areas of content for possible inclusion in The Military Balance and liaises with international sources of information and defence staffs to gather defence data; he manages the overall information gathering and assessment process for IISS defence data in The Military Balance. Before assuming his current role in 2007, he was Assistant Editor of Strategic Comments at the IISS.

Background: James first studied for a BA in English Literature and History, and then went up to Cambridge to read for the MPhil in International Relations, where he obtained a Daniel Vincent Prize for the best Middle Eastern dissertation in his year. Subsequently, he worked as a Research Assistant in Persian studies, and at the Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, both in Cambridge, and for the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce in London.
