Angry exchanges between the United States and North Korea are ratcheting up tensions and could create misperceptions that lead to war, analyst Mark Fitzpatrick says.

Donald Trump’s talk of military action against North Korea has prompted Pyongyang to threaten the US territory of Guam. In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Mark Fitzpatrick, Executive Director IISS-Americas, says:

  • the United States is not in a threatening posture, but the President’s “fire and fury” rhetoric may convince North Korea otherwise
  • North Korea would have “no trouble” striking targets in South Korea and Japan with nuclear missiles
  • new reports suggest North Korea may have 60 nuclear weapons – three times as many as previously thought.
