In his latest book, Destined for War: Can America and China Escape the Thucydides Trap?, Professor Allison identifies 16 cases from the past 500 years when a rising power threatened to displace a ruling one. Twelve of the cases ended violently.
Dr Graham Allison was Director of Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs from 1995 until July 2017. A leading analyst of US national security and defence policy, he served as Assistant Secretary of Defense in the first Clinton Administration. He is the author of numerous books including Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis (1971).
