IISS announces the appointment of
General Sir David Richards as Senior Adviser
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is pleased to announce the appointment of General Sir David Richards as Senior Adviser to the IISS.
General Richards comes to the IISS from his role as Chief of the Defence Staff, a position he held from October 2010 to July 2013.
General Richards’s long and prestigious military career has seen service across the globe, including commanding roles in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, East Timor and Germany. Before becoming Chief of the Defence Staff, he served as Commander-in-Chief of UK Land Forces from 2008–09; previously he was Commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan from 2006–07, a period that included significant NATO/ISAF expansion across the south and east of the country. His operational awards include a Mention in Despatches, Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Distinguished Service Order and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath. This latter award was the first time an officer had received an operational knighthood since the Second World War. He subsequently was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.
Dr John Chipman, Director-General and Chief Executive of the IISS, said: 'We are delighted that General Richards is joining the IISS in this advisory capacity. He will bring to us his extensive understanding and experience of contemporary international security affairs. We will count on his advice and assistance as we further strengthen our activities in the Middle East and Asia, especially through our established defence diplomacy platforms of the Shangri-La and Manama Dialogues, and as we extend this work to other regions including Latin America and Africa. The IISS is determined to bring fresh professional perspectives to our political risk work and to our military and defence analysis. It is splendid to have someone of General Richards's experience at our side as we work with our global membership and governments around the world to improve public policy on matters of defence and conflict resolution.'
General Richards said: 'I have always had a very high regard for the work of the IISS and am delighted to become their Senior Adviser. Strategy is something of a lost art and, with the IISS, my hope is that we can do something material about it.'
General Richards’s appointment is with effect from 21 October 2013.
