    Chapter Two: South Africa’s image problem in Africa

    For the West, South Africa is Africa's most important and progressive actor. Yet, many other African states resent Pretoria's paternalistic role and suspect it of using Africa as a vehicle for its own global self-promotion. This chapter examines South Africa's numerous image problems on the continent, resulting from both its economic and corporate expansionism, as well as its ongoing domestic struggles with corruption scandals and xenophobic attacks.
