This event is part of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2017 Discussion Series. The series focuses on Asia-related security issues and includes events in Washington and New York prior to and following the June IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier defence summit and a unique meeting of ministers and delegates from over 50 countries.

This post-Shangri La Dialogue panel discussion on tensions in Asia featured Amy Celico, a Principal at Albright Stonebridge Group, Mark Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of the IISS–Americas, and Daniel Russel, Diplomat in Residence and Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute.

Amy Celico is a Principal of Albright Stonebridge Group, and leads the firm’s China team in Washington DC. She also assists clients in other East Asian markets, drawing on more than 20 years of experience on issues in the region. Prior to joining the firm, she served as Senior Director for China Affairs at the Office of the US Trade Representative, where she was responsible for developing negotiating positions on issues related to China’s non-financial services sectors and intellectual property rights policies.

Mark Fitzpatrick is the Executive Director of the IISS–Americas, as well as head of the IISS Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Policy Programme. He joined IISS in 2005, after 26 years at the State Department, and moved back to Washington in December 2015. His research focus is on preventing nuclear dangers through non-proliferation, nuclear security, and arms control. Follow Mark Fitzpatrick @FitzpatrickIISS

Daniel Russel joined the Asia Society Policy Institute as Diplomat in Residence and Senior Fellow in April 2017. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service at the State Department, he most recently served as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Previously, he served at the White House as Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Asian Affairs. During his tenure there, he helped formulate President Obama’s strategic rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region.
