Military Exceptionalism in Pakistan

Survval 53-4 Cover

In the latest issue of Survival,  Professor Anatol Lieven writes that the Pakistani military is exceptional in being the only institution in the country 'that works more or less as it is meant to, as measured against the generally accepted standards of a modern state institution'.

In the article, he goes on to argue that the same features that work to save it from disintegration mar its ability to unify the country and transform it into a successful modern state.

In this interview, he also underlines that the Pakistan army's efficiency and meritocratic nature is relative.
