13 September 2008: Newshour
The Newshour debate this week will come from the IISS conference on security and conflict resolution in Geneva
This week sees the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which led to the invasions of Afghanistan and then Iraq. Fighting in those countries is still on going - and in Afghanistan the Taliban show signs of renewed strength. US power itself has come under strain recently. The war over South Ossetia showed that the uni-polar moment is over. Does this show the US cannot be the global policeman and keep order world wide? Is the world becoming a more dangerous place? And in an environment of conflict who are the people you can and can't talk to in the effort to achieve peace?
The BBC World Service's flagship news programme Newshour will be debating these questions with a select panel of guests from the IISS conference on global security and conflict resolution on Saturday 13th September. at 1330 BST, 1430 CEST (Geneva time).
The speakers are:
Dr Faleh Abdul-Jabar, Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies
Oksana Antonenko, Senior Fellow (Russia and Eurasia), IISS
Vice Admiral Kevin J Cosgriff, Former Commander, US Naval Forces Central Command; US Fifth Fleet
Major General Giora Eiland, Former Director, National Security Council, Iraq
Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, UN Special Envoy to Somalia, United Nations Political Office for Somalia, Nairobi
