DEFENCE Secretary Des Browne announced a double boost for Britain's service men and women today with an extra £80 million to improve military housing and a council tax rebate worth £140 to every soldier serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The extra cash to improve Army, Navy and Air Force housing will be aimed at single men and women in the armed services.
The £80m will pay for a further 1350 new en-suite rooms across the UK.
By 2013 about 50,000 single living rooms will be built or improved.
The second half of the package will provide 25 per cent council tax relief for the 13,000 soldiers currently on duty in Iraq and Afghanistan from next month.
Mr Browne told the Labour conference in Bournemouth it will be extended to all personnel serving overseas in the next 12 months.
