TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Iran's Defense Minister General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar here Monday dismissed US hyperboles about wide gaps between Tehran and regional countries, viewing such efforts by Washington as "fruitless".

The General's comments followed earlier remarks by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates at a regional security meeting in Manama, where the Washington official alleged that Iran was seeking to cause chaos, and its neighbors had to demand Tehran to renounce any intention of pursuing nuclear weapons.

Najjar described Iran as the most significant player in safeguarding and defending security in the Persian Gulf region, reminding that the US officials seek to sow discord among regional states to attain their goals.

The minister further underlined the need for negotiations and talks as the proper and principled way to resolve regional disputes and conflicts, and said, "The Islamic Iran with its ancient civilization and rich culture has and will always move on the path of peace, friendship and good neighborly relations with its neighbors."
