June 4th - - Bernama - Najib And Rumsfeld Hold Bilateral Talks

Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak met United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the sidelines of the high-level security forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue, here Sunday.

In the 30-minute meeting, both leaders hailed the excellent relationship between Malaysia and the US, particularly in the field of defence.

SINGAPORE -- Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak met United States Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the sidelines of the high-level security forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue, here Sunday.

In the 30-minute meeting, both leaders hailed the excellent relationship between Malaysia and the US, particularly in the field of defence.

Najib who is also Defence Minister told reporters after the meeting that they had a very useful discussion.

"We're very pleased with level of cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the field of defence. As you know, we are committed to ensuring that our part of the world remains peaceful and secure and we will continue to play our part.

"Our recent success in Sabah in arresting a number of militants underscores and underpins our commitment to safeguard our part of the world," Najib said.

He said that Malaysia was also committed to helping the international community when needed.

"Our commitment in Timor Leste and southern Philippines is also a good indication of our part in helping the international community. We have agreed that we should conitinue to worlk closely together, particularly in the field of anti-terrorism," he said.

Meanwhile, Rumsfeld said: "I certainly agreed that we develop an excellent military-to-military relationship and cooperation with respect to counter-terrorism, which is beneficial to both of our countries.

"...and also I thanked the minister for the his country's role with respect to East Timor and the cooperation there with the Australian effort to provide assistance."
