A leading international research body says Australia's military is better designed than the US Army to deal with extremist groups such as Al Qaeda.

Western countries have been planning for the wrong kind of warfare, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

Its review says the US and other countries have concentrated over the last few years in creating fantastically high-tech computerised militaries.

The review says the enemies of America and its allies have developed what are known as asymmetric tactics, such as suicide bombings to offset the West's overwhelming advantage in conventional weapons.

The review concludes that armed forces must therefore adapt to deal with such threats.
It predicts adapting may come easier to smaller armies such as those of Britain and Australia.
