The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) on Tuesday described, in its Strategic Survey 2004-'05, Turkey's success in getting a date for accession talks from the European Union at the Brussels summit last December as a "pyrrhic victory."
Referring to the famous Turkish saying, "Hope is the bread of the poor," the London-based think tank said that, after chronic oscillation between hope and desperation, Turkish citizens are finally happy with the decision in Brussels to begin EU membership negotiations this October, and that this has greatly bolstered their hopes.
Describing Turkey's confirmation of a date for talks in the Brussels summit asa pyrrhic victory, or a victory at great cost, the IISS claimed that the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party has managed to boost its popularity with reforms.
The survey also stated that Turkey has left a period of economic crisis behind, finally reaching stable economic growth.
