Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Defence ministers and representatives from 21 Asian countries attending an annual security meeting in Singapore have recognised the need to enhance maritime security in the Malacca Straits.
However, delegates agreed that cooperative measures in the Straits should respect national sovereignty and be consistent with international law.
The matter was discussed during a luncheon discussion on June 5 hosted by Singaporean Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean, according to the Singaporean Defence Ministry's statement.
Some 50,000 ships carrying 30 per cent of the world's trade and 50 percent of the world's oil pass through the Malacca Straits every year
