The University of Plymouth will host a lecture on the state of Pakistan and its implications for world affairs by Sir Hilary Synnott, former British High Commissioner to Islamabad.
Entitled 'Pakistan: How did it come to this?', Sir Hilary will assess historical developments in the country and the surrounding region at the 2009 Lord Caradon Lecture next month.
He will also analyse Pakistan's future prospects.
Sir Hilary is Senior Consulting Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, where he specialises in South Asian affairs.
He was British High Commissioner in Pakistan between 2000 and 2003 and Deputy High Commissioner in India from 1993 to 1996.
Dr John Rea, chairman of the Lord Caradon Trust, said: "We are delighted that Sir Hilary is our lecturer for 2009.
"As a distinguished diplomat and academic, and as a recent High Commissioner to Pakistan, Sir Hilary is exceptionally well-placed to analyse the present position and future prospects for Pakistan."
The Lord Caradon Lecture will be held on Wednesday November 18 in Theatre 1 of the university's Roland Levinsky Building. Following the lecture there will be a question and answer session and a reception.
