The House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy took evidence on the EU’s Operation Atalanta .

Witnesses

  • Dr Lee Willett, Head of the Maritime Studies Programme, Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI)
  • Jason Alderwick, Defence Analyst - Maritime, International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS)

 

The Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) answered questions from the Committee about subjects such as how they think the Operation could be improved, the UK’s approach and contribution to the Operation and the prosecution of pirates in Kenya and the Seychelles.

 

The witnesses were also asked about trends in piracy attacks in the area and influences such as illegal fishing and the dumping of toxic waste off the coast of Somalia on piracy.
