29 Apr 2008 - - Korea Times - Defense Cost-Sharing Talks to Test Korea-US Alliance
Defense Minister Lee Sang-hee and his U.S. counterpart, Robert Gates, are expected to focus on resolving the money issue during talks scheduled for later next month, defense ministry officials said. The two defense chiefs are scheduled to hold talks on the sidelines of an annual security forum in Singapore, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, to be held from May 30 to June 1, they said.
25 Apr 2008 - - Pioneer - The power of pretence
While it is nobody's case India should outsource its foreign policy to another country, it is worth asking what role, if any, it sees for itself in the power drama of the 21st century. The war of words vis-à-vis the Iranian President's visit is just one sample of this predicament. The actions of successive Indian public officials at the International Institute of Strategic Studies conference on India, held in New Delhi over the past weekend, presented other examples
24 Apr 2008 - - Al-Ahram Weekly - Can Bush attack again?
The US-Israeli path to war is not free of potholes and obstructions. For one, Iran has military capacities large enough to cause significant losses were hostilities to break out. The London International Institute for Strategic Studies report on the balance of powers in 2006 offers tangible information in this regard. Iran produces some 2,000 types of defensive arms, from ammunition to airplanes, and from missile launching systems to satellites. It exports military equipment to more than 30 countries, among
23 Apr 2008 - - Associated Press of Pakistan - Stable Pakistan key to terror-free region: Narayanan
A stable and democratic Pakistan will help build a terror-free atmosphere in the region, Indian National Security Adviser MK Narayanan has said. Addressing a function organised by the International Institute for Strategic Studies in New Delhi, he said that Pakistan’s transition to democracy would help in the building of a mutually beneficial relationship in an atmosphere free from violence and terror, All India Radio reported.
23 Apr 2008 - - Straits Times - India sends signal to US with Iranian leader's visit
On Sunday, in the clearest signal India has publicly sent, PM Singh's national security adviser M.K. Naraya-nan said 'any mishandling will impact negatively on us'. Pointing out that India had the second-largest population of Shi'ite Muslims in the world after Iran, and that the two countries had civilisational ties, Mr Narayanan went on to note that Iran was a country with a major global footprint.
23 Apr 2008 - - Live Mint - Refuelling halt triggers storm in a tea cup
Trust the visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to set the cat among the pigeons. When India’s national security adviser M.K. Narayanan told the International Institute of Strategic Studies-Citi India Global Forum meeting on a sleepy Sunday afternoon that Ahmadinejad had asked to stop over on 29 April — and New Delhi had said yes — he knew it would stir things up.
