Background:
Dr Bastian Giegerich is carrying out a research project on military crisis management supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Cologne, Germany. He joined the IISS on a post-doctoral fellowship (2005-2006) on European defence issues funded by Compagnia di San Paolo, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the Volkswagen Foundation. He is also contributing to the IISS European Capabilities Project, which is closely related to the subject of his main work. A graduate of the University of Potsdam (Germany), he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Maryland (USA), a Research Associate at the National Defense University in Washington DC and a Project Manager at the Aspen Institute Berlin. Dr Giegerich obtained his PhD at the London School of Economics, where he was also a class teacher in the Department for International Relations.
