Director of Development and Membership

 

Main responsibilities: Dr James Murphy is principally responsible for developing a professional capital appeal campaign at the IISS, recruitment of top-tier corporate members, management of the individual membership recruitment drive and any events associated with fundraising activity, including conferences and special lunches/dinners/briefings linked to the 50th anniversary.

 

Background:  Dr Murphy received his PhD in Political Science from Rice University in Houston in 1987 with specializations in European politics and international relations, with concentrations in business government regulation, foreign policy and international regulatory regimes. He also pursued studies at Sciences Po in Paris and at the University of Strasbourg.

 

He is a dual US and French national. Much of his career since earning his doctorate has been in the fundraising and development world. Key highlights include positions as Director of Colgate University’s Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations; Director of Foundation and Corporate Relations at Rice University, during which he was the lead manager to raise $30,000,000 for the establishment of the James Baker Institute for Public Policy, working closely with the former US Secretary of State to that end; and work as the Director for Resource Development and External Relations at the Global Reporting Initiative in Amsterdam and Executive Director of the International Business Ethics Institute in Washington DC.

 

He has worked with hundreds of Chairmen and CEOs of major global companies and has experience in running membership relationships as well as in raising seven-figure gifts from high net worth individuals.
