25 February 2005 - Major General Giora Eiland

On Friday 25 February 2005 Major General (ret.) Giora Eiland, Head of the Israeli National Security Council and National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister, gave a talk on "The Middle East after Sharm el-Sheikh: The Peace Process and Beyond''.

 

As head of the NSC, Major General Eiland heads the National Steering Committee in charge of the implementation of the Disengagement Plan. This committee comprises all the Directors-General of all the relevant ministries and is in charge of all the security and civilian aspects of the Plan’s implementation.

Before being appointed Head of the National Security Council in 2004, he served in the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) for 34 years in various posts ranging from platoon commander in the Paratrooper’s brigade in the early 1970s, to Head of the Israel Defence Forces’ Operations Branch in the late nineties. In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Major General and was appointed Head of the IDF Operations Directorate. In January 2001 he was appointed Head of the IDF’s Planning and Policy Directorate, from which he retired in January 2004 to head Israel’s National Security Council.
