5 April 2005 - His Excellency General Abdul Rahim Wardak
On Tuesday 5th April 2005, His Excellency General Abdul Rahim Wardak, The Minister for Defence of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan spoke at the IISS from 1.15-2.15pm. The title of his speech is “Security Sector Reform and State-Building in Afghanistan”.
The Minister outlined the security threats facing his country and said that the main long-term threat was organised crime and associated activity. Whilst recognising the vital role played by the international community in helping Aghanistan recover from years of conflict, General Wardak emphasised that Afghanistan did not intend to remain dependent on outside support. The aim of President Hamid Karzai is to bring the country to full independence. At the same time Kabul aims to make regional security agreements with its neighbours, and already has a working tri-partite arrangement with the US and Pakistan.
