On Thursday 11 November 2010, Carl Bildt, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sweden, addressed the IISS on ‘Future Challenges for Europe’.
Carl Bildt has served as Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs since October 2006. From 1991 to 1994 he served as Prime Minister. During his tenure, he negotiated Sweden’s accession to the European Union, signing the agreement in June 1994.
He also fulfilled an active role as a mediator in the Balkan conflict, as the European Union's Special Envoy to the Former Yugoslavia, co-chairman of the Dayton Peace Conference in 1995, and as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina. From 1999 to 2001, he served as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for the Balkans.
