NATO's 60th birthday

While celebrating 60 years of achievement at their upcoming April summit, NATO members must also face the difficult challenges ahead. France's recently announced return to the alliance's integrated military structure is important. However, the new Obama administration will also be seeking extra contributions in Afghanistan, relations with Russia must be discussed and a new strategic concept needs commissioning.

Iraq's provincial elections

Provincial elections in January marked the start of a year of intense electoral activity in Iraq and provide hope for the future. While voting passed off remarkably peacefully, the results showed strong support for a centralised state and a rejection of sectarianism. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki won a strong mandate, but the vote was also a victory for pluralism.

The Tamil Tigers' last stand?

After more than 25 years, the Sri Lankan Army finally seems on the verge of an armed victory against Tamil Tiger separatists. However, the international community is increasingly concerned about civilians trapped by the fighting in the country's north. A humanitarian crisis will not advance long-term peace between Sri Lanka's ethnic Sinhalese majority and its Tamil minority.

EU reforms wait on Ireland
Much is riding on the second Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, due in September 2009. Twenty-five European Union countries have ratified the treaty to reform the EU's institutional and decision-making machinery; the European Council has reassured Ireland that the treaty will not interfere with Irish taxation or neutrality. However, other members are watching the second Irish outcome carefully.
