Signs of Myanmar’s emergence from diplomatic isolation
There are indications that Myanmar could be seeking to shed its pariah status and to engage with the United States and Europe in a broad though tentative dialogue. With the United States acknowledging that sanctions have not achieved their objectives, diplomatic efforts have begun to explore whether there could be a negotiated solution to the long stand-off.

Obama’s new missile-defence strategy
The United States has scrapped plans to locate missile interceptors in Poland and an advanced radar in the Czech Republic. Instead, it will seek to protect itself and allies against Iranian missiles by expanding existing regional ballistic-missile defence systems. Technological developments and intelligence about Iran were cited as the reasons for the change in strategy.

Long wait for EU reform ends
The approval of the Lisbon Treaty by Irish voters has cleared the way for reforms of the European Union, including the establishment of the new post of EU president and an expansion of the role of the foreign-policy chief. The changes will have a significant effect on the EU’s role in matters of security and defence.

The Iranian nuclear crisis
Just as the unmasking of a hidden uranium-enrichment plant threatened to raise tensions about Iran’s nuclear programme to a new level, negotiations between Tehran and major powers produced a breakthrough that could lead to an exchange of enriched uranium and possibly mark the beginning of the end of their long confrontation.

China’s military might on display
A military parade to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Communist state offered an insight into China’s strategic posture and the results of modernisation of the People’s Liberation Army. The formations on show indicated that the PLA is achieving its goal of creating smaller, more agile and flexible units suited for the digital era.
