Military Balance 2009 North Korea has a million-strong army, with more than 4,000 tanks and about 18,000 artillery pieces, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Its forces are encamped only a short distance from the South Korean capital, Seoul. An Iraq-style invasion is not possible.
