The Transatlantic Relations Programme, directed by Dr Dana H. Allin, Senior Fellow for Transatlantic Affairs, has included meetings and publications on how to restore a consensus on key security challenges following fierce disagreements over the Iraq war. And while there remain large ideological and practical disagreements, there has also been solid, effective and ongoing transatlantic cooperation even as the debates about American power and unilateral intervention continue to sow discord.
This project will culminate in an Adelphi Paper on the transatlantic future to be published in the first half of 2006. A major focus for 2006 and 2007 will be on transatlantic and broader international strategies to address the challenge of Iran's nuclear ambitions, with a series of meetings and publications funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. In addition, Dr Allin's research agenda includes articles and a book project on the political, religious, cultural and strategic encounters between a post-11 September United States and the Europeans.
A recent workshop on 'Limited Partnership: The Scope for Renewed Transatlantic Security Consensus' convened by IISS and founded by the Carnegie corporation was held in Paris. Participants included Gilles Andreani, Philippe Errera and Dame Pauline Neville-Jones. The results of the workshop will be incorporated into the upcoming Adelphi Paper.
Current IISS publications on transatlantic relations include:
