29 Sep 2006 - Brian Cloughley - Key Developments on the Pakistan-Afghanistan Border

 
On 29 September 2006, the IISS hosted a Special Round Table Discussion with Mr Brian Cloughley, Author of ‘A history of the Pakistan Army’.  Mr Cloughley spoke on ‘Key Developments on the Pakistan-Afghanistan Border’. The Round Table Discussion was chaired by Mr Alex Nicoll, IISS Director of Defence Analysis.
 
Brian Cloughley is currently working on a book on Pakistan-Afghanistan relations in conjunction with Lt. Gen (retd.) Ali Mohammad Jan Aurakzai, the Governor of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, who was military commander there from 2001-2004.
 
Brian Cloughley was in the British and Australian Armies and served as an intelligence officer in Cyprus at the end of colonial rule, on attachment with the Jordan Desert Police Force, in Borneo during the Confrontation period, as Reconnaissance and Survey Officer in a nuclear missile regiment in Germany, and officer commanding the Australian Psychological Operations Unit in Vietnam. Other appointments included deputy head of the UN mission in Kashmir (1980-1982) and Australian defence attaché in Islamabad (December 1988 - July 1994).  The third edition of his book 'A History of the Pakistan Army'  was published in July 2006.
