On 29 September 2005, the IISS hosted a Special Round Table Discussion with Dr Jitendra Nath Misra, Joint Secretary (International Affairs), Integrated Defence Staff HQ, Ministry of Defence, India. Dr Misra spoke on ‘India and the US: A Strategic Partnership? ’. The Round Table Discussion was chaired by Mr Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, IISS Research Fellow for South Asia.

Dr. Jitendra Nath Misra is Joint Secretary (International Affairs) in India’s Integrated Defence Staff HQ in Delhi and the most senior foreign service official in the joint staff. A career diplomat for over 23 years, he has previously served in Indian diplomatic missions in London, Tel Aviv, Houston, Tripoli and Dhaka, as well as in the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi. In 2004-05, he was an Associate Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., where he taught a course on South Asia.
 
Dr. Misra has published a number of articles on South Asian political and security issues, as well as on Indian foreign policy. He has Ph.D. and M. Phil. degrees in South Asian Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, a Masters in Politics, a B.A. in History and a diploma in Arabic.
