On 25 March 2004, the IISS hosted a Special Round Table Discussion with Ms Christina Rocca, Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Affairs, US Department of State, Washington DC.

Ms Rocca was sworn in as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Affairs on 31 May 2001. Prior to joining the US State Department she was Foreign Affairs Advisor to Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS), where she specialised on issues relating to South and Central Asia, the Middle East and the Caucasus. She is the author of significant legislation, including three separate amendments providing presidential waivers for various sanctions imposed on both India and Pakistan. From 1982-1997, she was an intelligence officer with the Central Intelligence Agency.
 
Following her visit to India, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Ms. Rocca initiated a discussion on 'US Policy Towards India and Pakistan’. This meeting was off-the-record.
