19 Apr 2004 - Mr M. K. Narayanan - New Ideas on Kashmir

On 19 April 2004, the IISS hosted a Special Round Table Discussion with Mr M. K. Narayanan, former Director of India's Intelligence Bureau. Mr M. K. Narayanan is currently Special Advisor to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Mr. Narayanan was Director of the Intelligence Bureau from 1987 to 1992. He also served as Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, concurrently holding the post of Secretary, National Security Council. As the head of India's security and intelligence apparatus from 1987 to 1992, he was the Senior Adviser on national security affairs to four Prime Ministers from Rajiv Gandhi to P.V. Narasimha Rao.
 
Mr Narayanan is currently a Member of the Indian Government's Expert Group on Counter-Terrorism. In May 2000, he was appointed a Member of the Government's Task Forces on Intelligence and Internal Security. He was also a Member of India's National Security Advisory Board for two terms. On 29 May 2004, Mr Narayanan was appointed Special Advisor to the Indian Prime Minister.
 
At the IISS, Mr Narayanan gave a presentation on ‘New Ideas on Kashmir'.  This meeting was off-the-record.
