On 4 June 2006, General Ehsan Ul Haq, NI (M), Chairman of Pakistan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, addressed the audience at the 5th anniversary IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, held in Singapore from 2-4 June 2006.
In his address, General Ul Haq gave a detailed exposition of the country’s national security policy. He described Pakistan’s participation in the US-led ‘war on terror’ as a ‘difficult but necessary’ decision, and one that had cost many Pakistani lives. The country wanted a solution of the Kashmir dispute with India that was ‘acceptable to all three stakeholders – Pakistan, India and the Kashmiris’.
