First IISS Seminars in South Asia

 
On 10-17 October 2004 a four-member IISS team visited India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In India and Pakistan, the IISS team conducted the Institute’s first seminars in collaboration with security think tanks in the region, called on senior government officials and military officers, and engaged in discussions with strategic communities. In Sri Lanka, the IISS team interacted with the Foreign Minister and the Government’s Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process.
 
The First IISS-South Asia seminars on “Emerging Security Challenges and Opportunities” focused on nuclear non-proliferation, conventional forces & terrorism, and India-Pakistan relations. The seminars in New Delhi and Islamabad were attended by senior government officials and military officers, academics, policy analysts and journalists.
 
In India, the IISS team called on Mr J.N. Dixit, National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister (IISS Member); Mr M.K. Narayanan, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister; Mr Shyam Saran, Foreign Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; Lt. Gen. Shantanu Choudhary, Vice Chief of Army Staff; and Mr Jairam Ramesh, MP, Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, All India Congress Committee. The IISS team also met Mr Jaswant Singh, MP, Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House (former Cabinet Minister for Defence, External Affairs & Finance) (IISS Member).

In Pakistan, the IISS team called on Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri, and Lt. Gen. Khalid Kidwai, Director General, Strategic Plans Division, National (nuclear) Command Authority, Joint Staff HQ (Colonel Commandant of the Artillery Regiment), and interacted with senior staff members of the National Defence College, led by Maj. Gen. Syed Sabahat, Chief Instructor, War Wing.
 
 
 
 
 
SA Trip 1
 
In Sri Lanka, the IISS team interacted with the Foreign Minister, Mr Lakshman Kadirgamar, senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr John Gooneratne, Deputy Secretary General, Secretariat for Coordinating the Peace Process of the President’s Office.
 
The Members of the IISS team were Dr Gary Samore, IISS Director of Studies & Senior Fellow for Non-Proliferation (team leader), Sir Michael Quinlan, IISS Consulting Senior Fellow for South Asia, Mr Alex Nicoll, IISS Assistant Director & Senior Fellow for Defence Industry and Procurement, and Mr Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, IISS Research Fellow for South Asia.
