The Eurasia Security Seminar Series

In response to requests from London-based members and experts, the IISS Russia and Eurasia programme launched a new series of meetings – the Eurasia Security Seminars. These takw place at Arundel House and include presentations and discussions on current policy issues in Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Western NIS states. The objective of the seminars is to bring together policy-makers, business representatives and academic experts to discuss regional developments.

27 July 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Displacement in Georgia: IDP Attitudes to Conflict, Return and Justice Rachel Clogg, Caucasus Programme Director, Conciliation Resources and Magdalena Frichova Grono, Former Head of the Caucasus Office of the International Crisis Group, discussed the issue of internally displaced persons and their attitudes towards conflict resultion and the right of return.
18 July 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Georgia's Choices Tom de Waal, Senior Associate Russia and Eurasia Program, Carnegie Endowment spoke on Georgia's Choices on Monday 18 July 2011.
08 July 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Managing New Security Threats and Preventing Conflicts What can the EEAS do? Richard Wright, Director Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding and Security Policy, EEAS spoke on Managing New Security Threats and Preventing Conflicts What can the European External Action Service Do? on Friday 8 July.
01 July 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Russia's Policy in the Post-Soviet Space Gregory Karasin, State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation spoke on 'Russias Policy in the Post-Soviet Space' on Friday 1 July, 2011.
24 May 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Strategy for Reconciliation: Bridging Communities through Engagement Ekaterine Tkeshelashvili, Vice Prime Minister of Georgia and State Minister for Reintegration will speak at the IISS on Georgia's strategy of engagement with the territories of Abkazia and South Ossetia, and how this policy has fared since its introduction in January 2010.
23 May 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar - Prospects for NATO-Russia Cooperation on Missile Defence Major General (Retd) Vladimir Dvorkin, Russia's leading expert on Strategic Nuclear Forces and Strategic Missile Forces, spoke at the IISS on the issue of missile defence in Europe, and the proposed NATO-Russia cooperative missile defence system agreed at the 2010 NATO-Russia summit in Lisbon.
13 April 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar- The Conflicts in Georgia: Remaining Challenges Peter Semneby, Former EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus spoke on The Conflicts in Georgia: Remaining Challenges on Wednesday 13 April 2011.
18 February 2011 - Eurasia Security Seminar- Between East and West: Explaining Russia's Foreign Policy Fyodor Lukyanov, Editor-in-Chief of the Russia in Global Affairs journal, examined how the rise of China poses a difficult dilemma for Moscow in his talk 'Between East and West: Explaining Russia's Foreign Policy' on Friday 18 February 2011.
11 February 2011 - IISS Eurasia Security Seminar - 'Kosovo and the Rule of Law: The role of the EU' Prior to Kosovo's Declaration of Independence in February 2008, the EU prepared to deploy its largest ever field operation (EULEX) - some 2,000 international police officers, judges, prosecutors and customs personnel - with a dual mandate to work alongside local institutions to improve the Rule of Law combined with an executive role in the areas of war crimes, corruption and organised crime.
