The Eurasia Strategy Seminar Series

In response to requests from London-based members and experts, the IISS Russia and Eurasia programme launched a new series of meetings – the Eurasia Strategy Seminars. These took place at Arundel House and included presentations and discussions on current policy issues in Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and Western NIS states. The objective of the seminars was to bring together policy-makers, business representatives and academic experts to discuss regional developments.

  • 22 Jan 2010 - IISS Eurasia Security Seminar - “The Georgian-Abkhaz conflict - Is it all about Russia?” On Friday 22 January Ms. Arda Inal-Ipa, Centre for Humanitarian Programmes, Sukhum, Abkhazia and Mr. Paata Zakareishvili, Institute for the Study of Nationalism and Peace, Tbilisi spoke on “The Georgian-Abkhaz conflict - Is it all about Russia?”.

  • 10th Anniversary of the First war in Chechnya On December 6, the Eurasia Strategy Seminar will be dedicated to the 10th anniversary since the beginning of the first war in Chechnya in December 1994. The seminar will analyse the outcomes of the war, the current state of play in Chechnya as well as its impact on the stability of the surrounding region. The speakers and guests will include academics, journalists and NGO representatives who have been working on political, humanitarian and security issues in Chechnya.
  • Analysis of Tragic Events in Belsan The Eurasia Strategy Seminar on October 5 2004, was dedicated to the analysis of tragic events in Belsan, North Ossetia and its implications for Russian and international security. Speakers included General Aslambek Aslakhanov, Adviser to President Putin and Mr. Alexander Torshin, the Chairman of Parliamentary Commission on the Beslan Inquiry. As always, the seminar was chaired by IISS Senior Fellow Oksana Antonenko, who visited Belan just two weeks after the terrorist attack.
  • Ukrainian Contribution to Internl. Secur On September 8 2004, the Eurasia Strategy Seminar was addressed by the Defence Minister of Ukraine, Mr. Euvgen Marchuk. Minister Marchuk spoke about the Ukrainian contribution to International Security covering Ukraine-NATO relations and Ukraine’s contribution to coalition forces in Iraq, where Ukraine has sent 1600 troops. Mr. Marchuk also spoke about key priorities for Defence Reform in Ukraine.
