Central Asia and Afghanistan: Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects

On 11-12 November 2008 IISS and the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Tajikistan held an international conference on “Central Asia and Afghanistan; Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects” in Dushanbe (Tajikistan).

The conference brought together experts from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, India, Pakistan, Turkey, UK, France and US.  Representatives of NATO, OSCE, UN and the EU also took part at the conference.  Participants discussed the recent developments in Afghanistan and its impact on the neighbouring states, as well as the prospects of a greater engagement form regional states in economic reconstruction and stabilisation in Afghanistan. Special attention was paid to issues of insuring border security and addressing drug trafficking from Afghanistan.  The conference was possible due to financial support from NATO and OSCE.

A more detailed conference report will be available soon.
