25 Feb 02 - Russia’s Non-Proliferation Policies

On 25 February 2002 The International Institute for Strategic Studies held a half-day seminar on 'Russia’s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Policies and the Prospects for Enhancing European-Russian co-operation'.

The seminar was addressed by Academician Victor Mikhailov, who is Russia’s former Minister of Atomic Energy.  Mr Mikhailov is currently the Head of the Institute of Strategic Stability under the auspices of the Ministry of Atomic Energy and remains one of the leading experts in Russia on a whole range of nuclear issues.

Academician Mikhailov spoke about the new directions of Russia’s non-proliferation policies under President Putin’s Administration and offered ideas for enhancing Russia’s dialogue with the UK and other European states on nuclear non-proliferation issues. The second session of the seminar discussed the safety of Russia’s nuclear facilities and the effectiveness of international cooperation in this field.

Representatives from the Foreign Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in London were among those who attended.
