Seminar: The Ukrainian Security Environment after NATO Enlargement

IISS Ukraine and European Security Programme
18 December 1997

The seminar was co-sponsored by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and as a complement to Harvard University's Ukrainian National Security Program. Participants discussed two main topics: Ukrainian security-policy tasks and prospects for developing closer cooperation between Ukraine and NATO. The discussion outlined the main principles of Ukraine's national-security concept, Western attitudes towards Ukraine's role in European security; and the progress made by Ukraine's participation in NATO's Partnership for Peace programme and the importance of this. Participants emphasised the need for Kiev to establish economic sustainability as a precondition for genuine independence as well as the need to work more closely with European institutions.
