8-9 February 2007 - 'Fostering International Dialogue on Korean Security'

On 9 February 2007 the IISS hosted the fourth workshop of its ongoing Korean Security programme at Arundel House in London.The programme is jointly directed by Mark Fitzpatrick and Adam Ward, and is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Korea Foundation.

The programme has become a useful forum for frank discussion and debate among a broad group  of government officials, academics and journalists from numerous countries engaged in Korean security issues. The workshop provided a timely opportunity to analyse the dynamics of the Six Party Talks, which had restarted the previous day. Topics examined during the workshop included the evolution of US and Chinese policy towards North Korea after its nuclear test in October 2006; the efficacy of sanctions; the possibility of a regional security architecture emerging in Northeast Asia in the wake of the Six Party Talks; the role and utility of the United Nations; and how Korean security may be affected by the internal politics of each of the Six Party states.
