14-16 Dec 06 - Challenging Deterrence: Strategic Stability in the 21st Century

On 14-16 December 2006, the IISS held a joint workshop in collaboration with the Oxford University Changing Character of War Programme on "Challenging Deterrence: Strategic Stability in the 21st Century". The workshop was held at All Souls College, Oxford.
The event drew scholars and senior government officials from around the world to talk about how Cold War concepts of deterrence have been challenged by the current altered strategic landscape. What is the role of deterrence in a world where regional politics dominate global politics, in which longstanding nuclear powers consider revisions to their arsenals and doctrine, while new countries acquire nuclear capabilities, and nonstate actors enter the frame as relevant actors.
