Deterrence at Low Levels of Nuclear Weapons
On 20 November 2002, the IISS together with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) hosted a seminar entitled ‘Deterrence at Low Levels of Nuclear Weapons: A Reappraisal’. The workshop, which was sponsored by the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), took place in London at the IISS and brought together officials and experts to discuss issues of nuclear deterrence, with particular focus on the experiences and nuclear doctrines of France and the UK.
Trans-Atlantic Dialogue on Proliferation
On 19-20 September 2002 the IISS hosted a workshop entitled 'Trans-Atlantic Dialogue on Proliferation' at its offices in London. The workshop, which was sponsored by the W. Alton Jones Foundation, brought together senior officials and experts representing the EU, France, Germany, NATO, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, the UK, and the US to discuss ways to strengthen trans-Atlantic cooperation for dealing with today’s most urgent proliferation threats.
Non-Proliferation in the Bush Administration
On 24 June 2002, Mr Cirincione provided a comprehensive review of the Bush Administration’s non-proliferation policies. On 3 May 2002, the IISS and the Chemical and Biological Arms Control Institute (CBACI) hosted a joint workshop on “Next Steps on the BWC: Beyond the Protocol”. Officials and experts representing the U.S., UK, France and Germany gathered in London at the IISS to discuss alternatives to strengthen the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) in the wake of last year’s failure to reach international consensus on the Ad Hoc Group Chairman’s draft Protocol.
