On 22 September 2004 a delegation from the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) visited the IISS for the purpose of exchanging views on security developments in East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and in transatlantic affairs. The JIIA delegation was led by the institute's director, Makio Miyagawa. The JIIA and IISS plan to carry forward a broad-based dialogue on a regular basis.
