Visit of a delegation from the JIIA
On 22 September 2004 a delegation from the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) visited the IISS for the purpose of exchanging views on security developments in East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, and in transatlantic affairs. The JIIA delegation was led by the institute's director, Makio Miyagawa. The JIIA and IISS plan to carry forward a broad-based dialogue on a regular basis.
Visit of a delegation of Japanese MP's
On 16 July 2004 the IISS received a 20-strong delegation of parliamentarians from the opposition Democratic Party of Japan. The delegation was led by Ichiro Ozawa, who has been influencial in stimulating party-political realignments in Japan for many years. IISS Director Dr John Chipman and Senior Fellow for East Asia Security Adam Ward briefed the delegation on the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, where Japan has consistently been represented at a very high level. Hitoshi Tanaka addresses IISS
On 3 December 2003, Hitoshi Tanaka, Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister with particular responsibility for political and international security issues, delivered an address at the Institute entitled 'North Korea: is a diplomatic solution possible?'. In his wide-ranging off-the-record remarks, Deputy Foreign Minister Tanaka reviewed the evolution of Japan policy towards Pyongyang in recent years, before going on to speculate in detail about different scenarios for the Six Party Talks.
