Visit of Wang Zaixi
On 18 October 2004, Vice-Minister Wang Zaixi of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China’s State Council brought a substantial delegation to the IISS to discuss Beijing's policy towards the cross-Strait dispute. Vice-President of Central Party School
Sun Qingju, Vice-President of the Central Party School (CPS) of China, visited the IISS on 14 October 2004 to explore scope for deepening collaboration and exchanges between the two organisations. His delegation included members of the CPS Institute for International Strategic Studies. On 3 August 2004, the IISS hosted a six-member delegation from the Academy of Military Science (AMS) of the People’s Liberation Army. The delegation was led by the Vice-President of the Academy, Lt.-General Ge Dongsheng. The AMS acts as a national defence university, conducting research into armed forces development and military operations; develops military doctrine and strategic theory for the PLA; and performs consultative/analytical functions for the Central Military Commission, China
China in the 21st century: Rival or Partner?
On 21 June 2004, the IISS in collaboration with The Economist newspaper held an evening debate at Arundel House on the topic ‘China in the 21st century: Rival or Partner?’. The debate drew a large audience of IISS members and readers of the Economist, whose Asia Editor, Christopher Lockwood, chaired the event. The discussion ranged widely over economic and security issues, China’s foreign policy posture and the terms of its engagement with the outside world.
Perspectives on China–Taiwan relations
From 22–24 February 2004, the IISS co-sponsored with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) a conference at Arundel House entitled ‘Cross- Strait Challenges and Third Party Engagement’. This private event, organised on the IISS side by Senior Fellow for East Asian Security Adam Ward, brought together about 50 officials, diplomats and experts from Taiwan, the United States and Europe.

On 16 December 2003, Robert L. Suettinger led a roundtable discussion at Arundel House, chaired by Adam Ward, on the prospects for US–China relations. Visit to the IISS by General Xu Caihou
On 7 November 2003, the IISS welcomed General Xu Caihou, a senior member of China's Central Military Commission (High Command), for briefings and to exchange views on current international security issues. General Xu is the most senior officer of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to visit the UK in many years. Prior to coming to the IISS he met with the UK Secretary of State for Defence. In 2004, Xu was appointed Vice- Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
Visits of delegation from SIIS
On 20 October 2003 a delegation from the Shanghai Institute for International Studies (SIIS) visited the IISS to discuss a wide range of foreign policy issues. The visit formed part of the IISS' outreach to a variety of think-tanks and research centers in China.

On 12 June, the IISS held a one-day workshop at Arundel House entitled ‘Asia's Security Architecture Revisited’. Organised by Adam Ward, Senior Fellow for East Asian Security and Editor of Strategic Comments, the workshop involved 30 participants, with four major papers presented.
