More than 5,400 Syrians have been killed in the 10-month-old uprising against the government of President Bashar-al Assad, according to UN estimates. The Free Syrian Army claims some 30,000 defectors, but the regimes forces are ten times as large and the opposition is divided. A panel of IISS experts discussed the Syrian crisis.

- 17-18 November 2011 - IISS Workshop - Making sanctions work: problems and prospects, phase two
On 17 and 18 November 2011, the IISS convened a workshop entitled 'Making sanctions work: problems and prospects', in Istanbul. This was the second step in our collaboration with the UN Panel of Experts, the group established by UN Security Council resolution 1929. The meeting focused on how well the UN sanctions on Iran are being implemented and the difficulties that regional governments and commercial entities have experienced in this regard.
- 16 November 2011 - Discussion Meeting - The Maritime Dimension of the Libyan Conflict
The recent conflict in Libya involved a significant commitment of British military assets under the aegis of Operation Ellamy. While the no-fly zone and air strikes were broadly covered in the international media, the maritime component was less well-reported. Cdre John Kingwell, until this month commander of the UK Response Force Task Group that comprised Op Ellamy, addressed the IISS on the naval aspects of the recent conflict, and in particular the Royal Navys role in ousting the Ghadaffi regime.
