Manama Dialogue 2009 - Keynote Address: Sh Dr Muhammad Al Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah

Gulf and Middle Eastern Security

The IISS is in a unique position to help shape a better understanding of Gulf security issues from an international perspective and to help regional governments to shape their security agenda and deepen their links with other key regions, notably Asia, Europe and North America.

The IISS has established significant operations in the Gulf with its regional headquarters in the Kingdom of Bahrain and is in a position to generate world class research on global and regional security.

Exploiting its extensive network of contacts and linking its Middle East research programmes effectively with corresponding programmes in London, Singapore and Washington, the IISS will make its Gulf office a magnet of important quiet diplomacy and a hub for influential policy relevant research.

To consolidate this position of a centre of strategic analysis, the office will conduct a series of summits, addresses, briefings, workshops and conferences, hosting senior ministers, international governmental officials, military and intelligence chiefs, and global business leaders.

Fears that their nuclear-energy aspirations might be a preliminary step towards acquiring a nuclear deterrent against Iran have so far proved unfounded.
