Prime Minister David Cameron last month suggested armed guards would be permitted on British-flagged vessels passing through pirate-infested waters. Other nations have either already done the same or are contemplating it, inspired by the fact that no vessel with armed guards embarked has yet been pirated. But armed security guards bring with them questions about privatisation of military tasks, risks to crew and captain.
