On Wednesday 21 July 2010, Ahmed Rashid, freelance journalist and author spoke on ‘Talking to the Taliban: The role of Afghanistan - Prospects and Portents' .

 

Ahmed Rashid addressed the problems associated with talking to the Taliban, regional tensions, the roles played by Afghanistan and Pakistan, the capacity of the Karzai government to win over the non-Pashtun ethnic groups and the problems that can occur with power sharing agreements.

Ahmed Rashid is a Pakistani journalist based in Lahore. A former revolutionary and guerilla fighter, he is the author of the New York Times No. 1 Bestseller ‘Taliban’, and writes for ‘The Washington Post’, ‘The International Herald Tribune’ and BBC Online amongst numerous other news outlets.

This discussion was chaired by Sir Hilary Synnott, Consulting Senior Fellow, IISS and it took place in the Lee Kuan Yew Conference Room at Arundel House.
