Discussion Panel - A Long Term Strategy for Afghanistan

A panel of IISS experts debated a long term strategy for Afghanistan in a special discussion at the Global Strategic Review in Geneva. 


Subjects discussed included the terrorist threat, the outlook for military progress, future drivers of Afghan politics and the regional dimensions of the conflict.

Several high profile speakers discussed Afghanistan at the 10th IISS Shangri-la Dialogue in Singapore.


Dr Robert Gates, US Secretary of Defense, talked about the impact of Afghanistan on the US home front and the implications of the conflict for its Asian alliances. Read more

'Operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan 2010-11'

Brigadier James Chiswell MC

Brigadier James Chiswell MC Commander 16 Air Assault Brigade briefed IISS London on British Operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan 2010-11”. He explained the background to the Brigade’s fourth deployment to Afghanistan since 2001, showing how the brigade prepared for the tour. This included formulating a Brigade concept of operations that embraced the complexity of the environment in Afghanistan, the number of actors and the need to build support amongst the Afghan people.

In the last two years, a number of top officials have delivered addresses on Afghanistan at the IISS. These include General Stanley McChrystal, US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Shadow Secretary of State for Defence Liam Fox.
