The year 2008 is an important milestone for the International Institute for Strategic Studies as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary. In 1958, amidst fierce Cold War tensions, The Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), as it was then, was created to provide a platform to better understand and help mitigate the risks arising from international conflict and nuclear proliferation.
The IISS is constituted as a company limited by guarantee and is additionally registered as a charity (no. 206504). The IISS relies heavily on income from membership, sponsorship, and charitable donations from individuals and companies. As an independent and politically neutral organisation, the IISS receives no core funding from governments. Thanks to this support, the IISS has established an unparalleled reputation as an authority of international security and political and military conflict. The institute has grown to be a truly global think tank, with a presence on three continents and boasting a large international network reaching all corners of the globe.
